Layang Layang offers what I believe is the best location
for reef diving anywhere in the world. The dives we did went as follows
THE POINT This offers some of the most varied diving around the island, generally we
went out into the blue because this is where the big stuff is, on one dive we spotted a school of 50-60
Hammer Head Sharks at around 40 metres about 20 metres below us, then one of the popped over to say hi,
to say I was a little wary was an understatement, it was a magnificent 3.5 metres and about 10 metres away,
as close as I ever want to be! On another dive we decided to check out the reef and dropped onto a
ledge at around 20 metres, immediately we spotted a lovely White Tip Reef Shark swimming by and over the next coral head
another white tip asleep on the sand, we saw several varieties of Nudibrach and for the first time 2 Lizard fish
followed by a very large turtle, some very large Brown Patch Grouper, a nice shoal of Pick Handle Baracuda (70-80 at a guess)
and a very large group of Black Snapper. Loads of Starfish and two of the largest Giant Clams I've ever seen, big enough to
lie in if I was that way inclined. All in all a very nice site with plenty of soft and hard coral and an abundance of
fish that I have never seen anywhere else.
CORAL CAFE Coral Cafe is a nice gentle coral slope starting at around 5 metres dropping down to 40 metres. The slope is a profusion
of hard and soft coral, in particular table corals and gorgonian (fans). We found this a good site for photography as on the
occasions we dived there, the currents were very gentle. As everwhere in Layang the marine life is amazing, here we saw
amongst other things, several Nudibrach, Lionfish, Small Boxfish, Spotted Sweetlips, Reef Sharks, Blue Fin Trevally and some
very large Giant Clams. There are numerous cleaning stations here, where you can watch the tiny Cleaner Wrasse perform a
scale and polish on some of the larger inhabitants. Not one of the most dramatic sites in Layang but nice, relaxing and very
pretty.
D-WALL More to come No dive site is more than 15 minutes away and you
