Red Sea, Yolanda Reef

Yolanda Reef in the Red Sea, is on its day a great dive. The reef is so called, because the Cypriot merchant ship Yolanda sank here on 1-2 April 1980. When it sank it was only 16 years old and was carrying containers full of bathtubs, toilets, some cases of whiskey and BMW 320, which belonged to the captain. On 15th March 1987 the bulk of the wreck was sent over the edge into the blue in a particularly violent storm.

All that now remains is the non perishable cargo, mainly the sanitary items. The dive itself is in good conditions, beautiful. The wreck is generally the home of some large Malabar groupers, Napoleons, Yellow back Fusiliers Bluespotted Rays and frequently Swimming Moray's. Most divers will raise a smile at the quantity of toilets and bidets found at the end of the reef, but beware of the fire coral which has caught many of the unwary.

If you go on a trip to Ras Mohammed this site is a must.
